How to get to the Albertina

The Albertina is at Albertinaplatz 1, in Vienna’s 1st district, a short distance from the Staatsoper. The main entrance is on the old bastion, reached by an escalator or an outside lift. The nearest metro station is Karlsplatz/Oper.

By metro, tram and bus

The official site lists the U1, U2 and U4 at Karlsplatz/Oper, the U3 at Stephansplatz, trams 1, 2, D, 62 and 71 and the Wiener Lokalbahn to Baden at Kärntner Ring/Oper, and bus 2A at the Albertina stop.

The official site does not list public transport for Albertina Modern, at Karlsplatz 5. The Karlsplatz stops of the U1, U2 and U4 are about 250 m away in a straight line, our calculation, and the official site gives about ten minutes’ walk between the two museums. Check timetables and fares with Wiener Linien.

On foot from the centre

In a straight line the Albertina is about 170 m from the Staatsoper, 270 m from the Imperial Treasury, 480 m from the Kunsthistorisches Museum, 560 m from the Stephansdom, 720 m from the Leopold Museum and 770 m from the Karlskirche. These are distances on the map, not walking times, which we have not measured.

From Vienna airport

From 7 September 2026 to 31 October 2027 the City Airport Train is replaced by buses to Wien Mitte / Landstraße, which take 21 minutes and connect to the U3 and U4. The Railjet and Intercity trains run non-stop to Wien Hauptbahnhof in about 15 minutes, twice an hour. The REX 7 takes about 20 minutes to the Hauptbahnhof.

Airport bus line 1 serves the Hauptbahnhof and Westbahnhof in about 40 minutes, and the new line 4, from 5 September 2026, serves Karlsplatz, where the U1, U2 and U4 stop. We have not checked the onward route with Wiener Linien, and we did not read the fares: check them with ÖBB and Wiener Linien.

By car, access and accessibility

The official site lists disabled parking spaces at Albertinaplatz, Gluckgasse and Lobkowitzplatz 2, and does not describe other parking: check before you drive into the centre.

Wheelchairs can be borrowed free at the cloakroom with a document, and guide dogs are allowed. The cash desks are on the same level as the entrance.
